Prayer & Fasting

Prayer and fasting are important for a believer’s growth and maturity. They both play keys roles in strengthening a believers’ spirit, soul and body. Jesus teaches us how important prayer and fasting is through His life. In His period where Satan tempted Him, Jesus showed us how Satan’s major temptations cater to the things of the flesh. Therefore, dying to self will always make you overcome Satan’s temptations. Prayer and fasting helps with death to the flesh to empower us to overcome those temptations. Let us take the account: Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was very hungry. The devil came to tempt him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread." Jesus answered him, "The Scriptures say, 'It is not just bread that keeps people alive. Their lives depend on what God says.'" Then the devil led Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem and put him on a high place at the edge of the Temple area. He said to Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, jump off, because the Scriptures say, 'God will command his angels to help you, and their hands will catch you, so that you will not hit your foot on a rock.'" Jesus answered, "The Scriptures also say, 'You must not test the Lord your God.'" Then the devil led Jesus to the top of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and all the wonderful things in them. The devil said, "If you will bow down and worship me, I will give you all these things." Jesus said to him, "Get away from me, Satan! The Scriptures say, 'You must worship the Lord your God. Serve only him!'" So the devil left him. Then some angels came to Jesus and helped him (Mat 4:2-11 ERV).

What can we learn from the above account? We can learn the following:

1) Satan is a bully who likes to capitalize on any weakness he finds to tempt or bully humans.

2) Satan tried to break Jesus but Jesus had already broken Himself through the fast that all that came out of Him was the Word.

3) Satan likes to tempt people to disobey Father YAH at their time of need.

4) Satan’s temptations always focus on food, proving yourself, and the pleasures of this world.

Jesus showed us that even at His time of nothingness (not having food for 40 days), He was faithful to Father YAH’s will for His life. Therefore, we can see that the whole world is not worth our souls because our souls are more valuable that the whole world. Satan always tempts the flesh and this is why Jesus rebuked him speaking through Peter when he said: Then Jesus said to Peter, "Get away from me, Satan! You are not helping me! You don't care about the same things God does. You care only about things that people think are important (Mat 16:23 ERV)."

The combination of having the Word in you, prayer and fasting is the cure for physical and spiritual weakness as we see that through Jesus’ life, and it is the way for the human’s spirit, soul and body to work in unison. When Peter and the disciples wanted to not abandon Jesus, they were willing to not do that but did it. Why? Jesus said: Stay awake and pray for strength against temptation. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak (Mat 26:41 ERV)." We see here that a weak flesh makes humans susceptible to Satan’s temptations. Jesus at this time gave His disciples a chance to gain spiritual strength in prayer to help their bodies stand against Satan’s temptations so that they could indeed prove their words as true. However, they allowed sleep have more control over their bodies and missed that opportunity for empowerment. From the aforementioned scripture we see opposing directions by the flesh and the spirit. Remember that from the beginning it was not so. It is more like since Adam and Eve’s fall in the Garden of Eden, Satan teaches the human flesh evil while the humans’ spirits know good. Satan began this way of tempting humans in the Garden where it was what they saw that he used to tempt them. Prayer and fasting helps with the unification of both a human’s spirit and flesh to function as a unit and that is why prayer and fasting must be coupled with the Word. The Word conditions the humans’ mind and spirit to work with the human body to overcome Satan’s temptations.

Let us take this topic on prayer and fasting in sequence. To this end, we will discuss prayer first and then fasting before we move to prayer and fasting.

Prayer

            Jesus taught us the key elements that make up Father YAH’s will in prayer when He said: Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Mat 6:9-10 ESV).

We acknowledge you as our Provider of all we need each day. Forgive us the wrongs we have done as we ourselves release forgiveness to those who have wronged us (Mat 6:11-12 TPT).

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen (Mat 6:13 KJV).  Through this format for praying, we can see the heart of prayer involves the following:

1) Keeping Father YAH’s name holy on earth just as it is in Heaven.

2) Looking to the establishment of Father YAH’s kingdom on the earth just as it is in Heaven i.e. an alignment between Heaven and earth as one kingdom.

3) Enforcing Father YAH’s will on earth as it is in Heaven.

4) Humans having Father YAH as their Provider on this earth just as He is the Provider in Heaven.

5) Humans’ repentance triggering Father YAH’s forgiveness.

6) Humans’ giving mercy to other humans as they forgive them.

7) Father YAH saving humans from the temptations of Satan.

8) Father YAH delivering humans from all Satan’s evil.

9) Acknowledging that the kingdom Earth belongs to Father YAH.

10) Acknowledging that all power and glory belong to Father YAH.

The aforementioned list is basically where the focus for believers should be in prayer. Rather, we see many believers’ prayers either focused on themselves, or their freewill to pray Father YAH’s will is sat on by their Pastors who want them to only pray their own will. If believers keep their focus on Father YAH’s will, they would be a part of those celebrating with Heaven when they said: The seventh angel blew his trumpet. Then there were loud voices in heaven. The voices said, "The kingdom of the world has now become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah. And he will rule forever and ever (Rev 11:15 ERV)." Father YAH has always wanted Heaven and earth to be one again as it was connected at the beginning of creation. That is at the very centre of His will and this is why He said: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared. Now there was no sea. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It was prepared like a bride dressed for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne. It said, "Now God's home is with people. He will live with them. They will be his people. God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, sadness, crying, or pain. All the old ways are gone." The one who was sitting on the throne said, "Look, I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this, because these words are true and can be trusted (Rev 21:1-5 ERV)."

            Prayer is not about shouting as if Father YAH is deaf or by the repetition of the same things with the hopes of Father YAH hearing your prayer. Those are not manifestations of faith while praying. Jesus already corrected us about this when He said: When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites. They love to stand in the synagogues and on the street corners and pray loudly. They want people to see them. The truth is, that's all the reward they will get. But when you pray, you should go into your room and close the door. Then pray to your Father. He is there in that private place. He can see what is done in private, and he will reward you. "And when you pray, don't be like the people who don't know God. They say the same things again and again. They think that if they say it enough, their god will hear them. Don't be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him (Mat 6:5-8 ERV). If shouting meant answers to prayers then Hannah’s silent prayer would not have been heard or answered by Father YAH. What about times when you cannot shout? I am talking about when demonic manifestation tries to tie your tongue from speaking any word? Prayer is silent in the heart at such times, and praying in your heart with Father YAH’s tongues by His Holy Spirit helps release your physical tongue to speak. However, if you are only taught prayer as shouting, you would feel defeated at such times.

            Prayer should always believe in Father YAH and should always involve the Holy Spirit. Let us take some scriptures: Jesus answered, "The truth is, if you have faith and no doubts, you will be able to do the same as I did to this tree. And you will be able to do more. You will be able to say to this mountain, 'Go, mountain, fall into the sea.' And if you have faith, it will happen. If you believe, you will get anything you ask for in prayer (Mat 21:21-22 ERV)." 

But when you ask God, you must believe. Don't doubt him. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is blown up and down by the wind. People like that are thinking two different things at the same time. They can never decide what to do. So they should not think they will receive anything from the Lord (Jas 1:6-7 ERV).

But you, dear friends, use your most holy faith to build yourselves up even stronger. Pray with the help of the Holy Spirit (Jud 1:20 ERV).

Prayer to God (Father YAH) holds the key to solving many problems on this earth because it is more powerful than the most dangerous weapon, yet it is a link between you and God (Father YAH), and we get more spiritual strength from God (Father YAH) when we pray. Through prayer, you invite God (Father YAH) into a matter to help you move any mountain. And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his/her heart, but believes that what he/she says will come to pass, it will be done for him/her. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours (Mar 11:22-24 ESV emphasis mine). Let me take 3 quotes that help you understand this point I just made on prayer.

1)  I borrowed two quotes from Katharine Bushnell on prayer, though I modified the “man” to “humans” because she was referring to all humans in her writing: “Prayer accomplishes more for this world than anything else humans can do and carries the greatest power than humans can ever exercise.”

“This chapter in the Bible teaches us that more things are done by God in answer to prayer on earth than by any other means known to humans.”

2) I take another from Kathryn Kuhlman: “The greatest power God has given to men and women is the power of prayer, but always remember, God has established the law of prayer and faith. Prayer is conscious of the need, while faith supplies it. Prayer never obtains anything from God unless faith is present: and again, faith never receives anything from God unless prayer makes a petition. Prayer and faith work harmoniously together—both are necessary in their distinct functions, but are quite different to their nature. Prayer is the voice of the soul, while faith is the hand. It is only through prayer that the soul can establish communion with its Creator, and it is only through faith that spiritual victories are won.”

3) I take my last from Smith Wigglesworth: “I believe we have yet to learn what it would be with a Pentecostal Church in England that understood truly the work of intercession. I believe God the Holy Ghost wants to teach us that it is not only the people on the platform who can move things by prayer. You people, the Lord can move things through you. We have to learn the power of the breath of the Holy Ghost. If I am filled with the Holy Ghost, He will formulate the word that will come into my heart. The sound of my voice is only by the breath that goes through it.”

My disclaimer here is that, no one should mistake me quoting the aforementioned works to say everything they preached was correct. I have simply highlighted some facts but it is the job of the believer to sit with the Holy Spirit to divide truth in any material they read so that they do not learn errors in the process regardless of who the preacher is.

            Enoch was one man who understood the power of prayer so he played the role of intercessor for humanity to pacify Father YAH’s wrath on humanity and he petitioned for humanity. Hence, he taught us to continue to petition and intercede to change things on the earth when he said: Be it known to you, you sinners, that the Most High is mindful of your destruction, and the angels of heaven rejoice over your destruction. What will you do, you sinners, and where shall you flee on that day of judgment, when you hear the voice of the prayer of the righteous (Enoch 97:2-3)?

In those days make ready, you righteous, to raise your prayers as a memorial, and place them as a testimony before the angels, that they may place the sin of the sinners for a reminder before the Most High (Enoch 99:3).

And in those days the prayer of the righteous shall reach to the Lord, and for you the days of your judgment shall come. And all the words of your unrighteousness shall be read out before the Great Holy One, and your faces shall be covered with shame, and He will reject every work which is grounded on unrighteousness (Enoch 97:5-6). Here, is a path of wisdom for you, as you need to educate yourself on Father YAH’s laws in the Holy Bible to then write down all the laws that have been broken (transgressed) by Satan and his kingdom of darkness on this earth, so that you can begin to clear the earth from such activities and enforce Father YAH’s will of righteousness and justice on the earth. Father YAH responds to our petitions. There is a court in Heaven and you need to know Father YAH’s laws and go with the Holy Spirit to present your case there. Look at scriptures which talk about the Heavenly court:

But the court shall sit in judgment, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed to the end. And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him (Dan 7:26-27 ESV).

All rise! For God now comes to judge as he convenes heaven’s courtroom. He judges every judge and rules over every ruler, saying, “How long will you judges refuse to listen to the voice of true justice and continue to corrupt what is right by judging in favor of the wrong (Psa 82:1-2 TPT)?”

For the LORD (YAH) is our judge; the LORD (YAH) is our lawgiver; the LORD (YAH) is our king; he will save us (Isa 33:22 ESV emphasis mine). Considering this, take responsibility on this earth and enjoy longevity on it! Dress this earth in righteousness and justice through prayer!

            Once a believer begins to truly start praying with the Holy Spirit as their prayer partner, they would see how risky it is to just invite anyone to join you in praying. The Holy Spirit has to be the one to help you vet those that can join you in prayer because He is your prayer partner first before anyone else. Prayer is really powerful and that is why Jesus said: To say it another way, if two of you on earth agree on anything you pray for, my Father in heaven will do what you ask. Yes, if two or three people are together believing in me, I am there with them (Mat 18:19-20 ERV)." Do you now see why it is important that the Holy Spirit vets your prayer partner(s) for you? If you are praying with Satanists or Nephilims without knowing, you will have many unanswered prayers because darkness and light cannot be united in prayer and God (Father YAH) will answer that prayer. That is a lukewarm state and Father YAH hates lukewarmness: “The people of Israel mingle with godless foreigners, making themselves as worthless as a half-baked cake (Hos 7:8 NLT)!” Similarly, when you pray with someone not agreeing with you on a matter, who is sinful or full of unbelief, how does your prayer of agreement get answered? Two people will not walk together unless they have agreed to do so (Amo 3:3 ERV).

For how can we walk together with your sins between us (Amo 3:3 TLB)?

Look, the LORD'S power is enough to save you. He can hear you when you ask him for help. It is your sins that separate you from your God. He turns away from you when he sees them (Isa 59:1-2 ERV). Only Father YAH’s mercy can get such prayers answered. So, why do guesswork when you can simply let the Holy Spirit help you build a prayer circle or team if you need to? Yet, always remember that the Holy Spirit is your most important prayer partner that you cannot substitute.

            Next, let us see how we pray to Father YAH based on what Jesus taught us. I am deliberate in teaching this because some humans pray to Jesus in the name of Jesus instead of praying to Father YAH in the name of Jesus.

How to pray to God (Father YAH)

Prayer is simply talking to God the Father i.e. Father YAH in the name of Jesus. The name of Jesus is the stamp/signature that validates/approves our prayer(s) to God. Jesus said: At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything, for you can go directly to the Father and ask him, and he will give you what you ask for because you use my name (Jhn 16:23 TLB). The format is: “Heavenly Father – (your request) – in Jesus’ name. Amen!” Amen simply means “so shall it be!” So, begin to ask God His will for the earth and have a consistent prayer time praying God’s will for His earth, your life, and the lives of His remnants on this earth. Finish strong and stand strong until Jesus comes again.

            Moving on, we will be looking at fasting to better understand what benefits it holds for a believer. What can we gain from fasting?

Fasting

Fasting is a special time to put your flesh last and your spirit first. It is an intimate time with Father YAH to learn, to be close to Him and to grow in spiritual strength. The benefits that fasting holds when done the right way supersedes just discipline but it helps you die to self. It teaches you how to be in touch with the need of others because you would truly understand what it feels like to be hungry. As a result, it would be hard to be heartless towards the hunger of another human person or even be a cause of hunger to humans or even animals. Fasting strengthens you spiritually to put your spirit above your flesh so many forms of gluttonous eating can be cured through fasting the right way. Fasting the right way also helps you value food and curbs a wasteful mindset to eating and handling food.

Father YAH shows us what fake fasting and truth fasting looks like when He said: They still come every day to worship me, acting as if they want to learn my ways. They pretend to be a nation that lives right and obeys the commands of their God. They ask me to judge them fairly. They want their God to be near them. They say, "We fast to show honor to you. Why don't you see us? We starve our bodies to show honor to you. Why don't you notice us?" But God says, "You do things to please yourselves on those special days of fasting. And you punish your servants, not your own bodies. You are hungry, but not for food. You are hungry for arguing and fighting, not for bread. You are hungry to hit people with your evil hands. This is not the way to fast if you want your prayers to be heard in heaven! Do you think I want to see people punish their bodies on those days of fasting? Do you think I want people to look sad and bow their heads like dead plants? Do you think I want people to wear mourning clothes and sit in ashes to show their sadness? That is what you do on your days of fasting. Do you think that is what the LORD wants? "I will tell you the kind of day I want—a day to set people free. I want a day that you take the burdens off others. I want a day when you set troubled people free and you take the burdens from their shoulders. I want you to share your food with the hungry. I want you to find the poor who don't have homes and bring them into your own homes. When you see people who have no clothes, give them your clothes! Don't hide from your relatives when they need help." If you do these things, your light will begin to shine like the light of dawn. Then your wounds will heal. Your "Goodness" will walk in front of you, and the Glory of the LORD will come following behind you. Then you will call to the LORD, and he will answer you. You will cry out to him, and he will say, "Here I am." Stop causing trouble and putting burdens on people. Stop saying things to hurt people or accusing them of things they didn't do. Feel sorry for hungry people and give them food. Help those who are troubled and satisfy their needs. Then your light will shine in the darkness. You will be like the bright sunshine at noon. The LORD will always lead you and satisfy your needs in dry lands. He will give strength to your bones. You will be like a garden that has plenty of water, like a spring that never goes dry (Isa 58:2-11 ERV). What can we learn about fasting from the foregoing scriptures? We can learn the following:

1) We do not approach fasting like hypocrites.

2) Being evil and committing sin will never allow your fasting to be accepted by Father YAH.

3) Fasting is not for public show or a burden.

4) Fasting is a time to loose the captive and remove the burden off humans.

5) Fasting is a time of sharing.

6) Fasting is a time of helping the poor.

7) Fasting is a time to be truly human towards Father YAH and human towards other humans.

8) Fasting is a time to help others in need.

9) Fasting is a time to be merciful.

10) Fasting is a time for healing.

11) Fasting is a time to shine, to experience Father YAH’s grace and to His glory to follow you.

12) Fasting is a time for answered prayers.

13) Fasting is a time to access Father YAH from a closer range.

14) Fasting is a time of repentance.

15) Fasting is a time of empowerment to help you overcome darkness.

16) Fasting is a time for divine restoration and replenishment.

            Seeing how helpful fasting is from the aforementioned list and how Father YAH took His time to explain fasting in that scripture, fasting needs to be done right. Jesus revisits the point on fasting right when He said: When you fast, don't make yourselves look sad like the hypocrites. They put a look of suffering on their faces so that people will see they are fasting. The truth is, that's all the reward they will get. So when you fast, wash your face and make yourself look nice. Then no one will know you are fasting, except your Father, who is with you even in private. He can see what is done in private, and he will reward you (Mat 6:16-18 ERV). Father YAH accepts and rewards genuine fast only! So, fast the right way!

You can have fasting that breaks at a particular time or what they call dry fasting which means not drinking water or food. The secret to succeeding with dry fasting is separation and not involving yourself with activities but locking yourself up with Father YAH. Also, while involved in dry fasting, taking the Holy Communion helps at such a time to strengthen you through it. Jesus said: My body is true food, and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my body and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them (Jhn 6:55-56 ERV). However, do not follow the lie of there being a “Daniel” fast! There is nothing like that. Daniel and the obedient Hebrews were not fasting by eating vegetables and drinking water. They told us why they ate vegetables and drank water to prevent themselves from begin defiled by the unclean food the king of Babylon gave. Hence, Father YAH helped them gain favour because they were upholding His Law. Daniel did not want to eat the king's rich food and wine because it would make him unclean. So he asked Ashpenaz for permission not to make himself unclean in this way. God caused Ashpenaz, the man in charge of the officials, to be kind and loyal to Daniel (Dan 1:8-9 ERV). Daniel and his team were not fasting but fighting to save their souls from getting spiritually compromised by unclean foods and that was why they ate what seemed to be the safest thing they could eat (i.e. vegetables). What is the moral of telling you about the myth called Daniel’s fast? It is to say, if you want to include breaking to eat food in your fast do so, and if you do not want food at all, do not eat. If it is Father YAH who told you to fast and specified the kind of fast, you have to follow what He says. Father YAH’s commands are not burdensome! Jesus said: “Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear (Mat 11:28-30 TPT).”

            At this juncture, we would be looking at prayer and fasting together as one unit to understand why they are paired together. However, I believe that from looking at the power they hold while I discussed them individually, you should see the powerhouse that the combination of the two begets.

Prayer and Fasting

            Jesus told us to watch and pray. Watch what? The word! Watching the word as we fast is very important because it is the spiritual food we are feeding on to energize our spirit instead of the flesh. So, fasting must go with reading the Word and prayer. Fasting + Prayer + the Word = the unification of the total human (spirit, soul and body). These three done together as Father YAH wants it done will always make you have a power bank to draw from when in need of strength for anything or even to overcome temptation. Have a productive praying and fasting time by taking it as a spiritual exercise as it ought to be seen instead of a burden. Then, commit your fast to Father YAH and ask for His angels to help tend to you just as they helped Jesus when He fasted.

            It is judgment time. Now, by the power of the Holy Spirit, I declare the following judgment and they become a reality now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Judgment

1) I declare the instant deaths of those agents of darkness who deliberately hinder the prayers of believers and even join them to pray to hinder it now by the flaming sword of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

2) I declare the complete destruction of all pillars and foundations Satan and his cohorts created and use to hinder the prayers of believers now by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

3) By the fire and sword of the Holy Spirit, I declare the instant deaths of every agent of darkness compromising the fast of a believer or tempting them to break it now. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

4) I declare the complete destruction of all pillars and foundations Satan and his cohorts created and use to hinder fasting and the fasting of believers now by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

5) I declare the complete destruction of all pillars and foundations Satan and his cohorts created and use to hinder prayer and fasting of believers now by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

6) I declare the total end to every lie Satan and his cohorts have taught about prayer and fasting now. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I declare their judgments and speak an eternal curse on them by the power of the Holy Spirit now. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

7) By the power of the Holy Spirit, I declare the complete destruction of all pillars and foundations of all Satan’s lies regarding prayer and fasting now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

8) I declare a special judgment by the Holy Spirit on those using the prayers of believers for their own selfish purposes now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

9) Now, I declare a special judgment and a special eternal curse by the Holy Spirit on those like T.B Joshua who use Levites like Akewe to shield them (the Satanists and Nephilims) from Father YAH’s judgment because Akewe did not know his true lineage as Hebrew and a Levite. In Jesus’ name. Amen! By the Holy Spirit, I sentence such people to the Lake of Fire to begin their judgments now. In Jesus’ name. Amen! By the power of the Holy Spirit, I declare the maximum judgment for such people now and for eternity for defiling Father YAH’s Levites. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

10) Those using the prayers and fasting of believers for Satan, I declare your instant deaths by the fire and the sword of the Holy Spirit now. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I sentence you now to the Lake of Fire for your maximum judgment now by the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen! I place a special curse that is eternal by the Holy Spirit on the repeat of this sin on this earth now. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
